. this is from "the new york times" editorial. and john, independent from texas. caller: i have been unemployed for about eight and a half months, and this situation is just ridiculous. they claim the economy is better here in texas, it is a bold face life. the few jobs that are available are part time walmart-type jobs. i've got a college degree. i graduated from college 16 years ago. i am getting $828 a month in unemployment. and these republicans want you to think people are sponging? try sponging off of 829 -- $820 a month in a high-cost area. the local chamber of commerce brag about how great it is to live here in the valley. if you are making $80,000, it is reasonable cost of living. but if you are barely scraping by at 20,000, it is barely. and perry greeting somebody jobs, that is upsurged. the jobs are just not here. let me tell you this, my last job was working at the local work force office. we are the ones who are supposed to help people find jobs. i can tell you the real honest unemployment rate is much higher than what they are reporting and has been for years. it has not been --

of rainfall to july where the year-long drought in texas hit its worst month. on top of it, parched landscape. wildfires. over 4 million acres burned. $50 billion worth of losses in terms of agriculture. in august, we shifted gears to the hurricane. hurricane irene, record flooding across the northeast, eastern seaboard. killed 43. billions of dollars in damages. october, it was snow time again. the target was mainly in the northeast. killed 13 people. left 1.6 million without power. many people in connecticut, you remember this, without power for weeks, almost a month in locations. it was basically weather taking people back to the stone age. >> taking them back to their parents' house. i know a lot of folk whose moved out because they didn't have power for weeks. >> rendered helpless because of the elements, in this day and age, all of this technology, still at the mercy of mother nature. >> tempting to move back home. mom does your laundry. >> some good things. >> that's about it. why do you think 2011 was so bad? just coincidence? the trifecta of conditions, was there something else? >> f

of texas. i love you but the weather is tough. scattered showers along i-35 corridor in houston, some rain there, too. take a look at this. in west texas it's all switching over to snowfall. some could give you whiteout conditions on parts of i-20. zoom in a little more south of lubbock and towards amarillo and abilene -- amarillo is here, abilene closer as we venture in a little more. high elevations in odessa and midland. that's where the snow is heavier. even then only a few inches of snowfall. all things again relative in the rockies. the snow there, inches. snowfall fell several feet within boulder, several hours ago. a lot of die out. this is the snowpack that remains. also snow on the ground in parts of the northeast and western great lakes. as we fast forward into tonight what we anticipate and into tomorrow morning, snow continuing through parts of texas, pacific northwest and into the northern great lakes. that's going to be about it. doesn't look like it's going to be a white christmas for a lot of people. again, caveat, fairly nice travel conditions with the exception of the lo

, kan., iowa, texas, corn, wheat, soy, they have all been beneficiaries is directly, but especially over the last 15 years, of a very beneficial subsidies to the agricultural sector. they were designed early on to be stabilizing subsidies by the usda and congress has wrestled with exactly what the right amount of subsidies should be applied to achieve a specific goal. the farmers have changed the nature of the subsidies and they promised to lessen them over time as well moving away from a direct subsidy on a per acre or per commodity basis to more of an indirect subsidy. for example, using a combination of federal subsidies and market mechanisms, like crop insurance, and other types of stabilizing mechanisms to maintain farm income. it is generally agreed, yes, we do have a disproportionate share of agricultural subsidies because we do produce a disproportionate share of agricultural product. i would not pass the laws, but they are a beneficiary of those laws and have been a beneficiary of the subsidies over time. host: more statistics here as we carry on with our guests and callers from

christmas, west texas. fresh snow coming down from midland northwards to lubbock. new mexico, much of the state has been covered in snow the last week. unfortunately for those in the dallas/ft. worth area, looks like plain old rain. 48-hour snowfall, west texas, a little in washington state, maybe a tiny bit off the great lakes in upstate new york but not a lot of fresh snow. in other words, if you don't are snow on the ground right now, i can't get you a white christmas. this map shows who has a white christmas. areas in white and blue is where the snowpack is. the green, earth tone, that's where the ground is bare. almost all of the eastern half of the united states is bare. even parts of new england got a little bit yesterday but that's about it. there's been very much a lack of snow so far this winter season. so, your christmas eve forecast, light rain turning into steadier rains for houston, dallas, louisiana, watch out, you'll get drenched throughout tonight into tomorrow. much of the country looks great. your christmas day forecast. louisiana in mississippi, alabama, overall
